Members of
the Harriet Lane House Staff are chosen through the National Resident Matching Program. Currently, there are 80 residents representing 48 different medical schools. Harriet Lane residents are a diverse but cohesive group, dedicated to excellent teaching and patient care. The chief residents have completed three years of house staff training in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and also have had one year of fellowship or practice experience. During the regular teaching rounds, chief residents discuss management issues and serve as consultants to the house staff and to subspecialty services. Administratively, the chief residents are responsible for the house staff rotation schedule, organizing daily conferences and Pediatric Grand Rounds. The chief residents represent the house staff in discussions, convey the house staff's attitudes on various subjects, and serve as their ombudsmen.
