Baltimore County firefighters engaged in a fierce hoagie-building contest with County police, Sept. 30, and earned $1,000 for Hopkins Children’s pediatric burn center. The firefighters made 46 hoagies in three minutes to tie with the police. They then donated their prize - awarded by Wawa as part of its grand opening of a Reisterstown, Md., store - to Hopkins Children’s, and added an additional $1 per-sandwich, bringing the total to $1,046.
Wawa’s mascot, Wally Goose, store associates and executives were on hand for the contest that took place after the formal ribbon cutting ceremony. The hoagies were made “in the traditional Wawa way,” said a Wawa spokesperson.
Since 1987, Wawa and its customers have donated more than $1.2 million to Hopkins Children’s Center.
Designated as the regional pediatric burn center for the State of Maryland in 2006, Hopkins Children’s Center cares for all burn victims under the age of 15. The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is the state-designated burn center for adults.
