Allergy and Immunology

Robert WoodwPatient

Robert Wood, M.D., and Pamela Guerrerio, M.D., examine a young patient.

The Eudowood Division of Allergy and Immunology’s mission is to provide top-notch clinical services, conduct cutting-edge research and train future pediatric allergist-immunologists for careers in academic medicine. The division has a three-pronged focus: Food allergies, asthma and environmental allergies and primary immunodeficiency disorders and is recognized internationally for its clinical expertise in all of these areas.

Food Allergies
Our groundbreaking food allergy research is led by Robert Wood, M.D., who is also chief of Pediatric Allergy & Immunology
Asthma and Environmental Allergies
Elizabeth Matsui, M.D., is known for her research into asthma and inner-city allergens.
Immunodeficiencies Our Immunodeficiency Clinic, the Pediatric Immunology Laboratory, and the Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) Clinical Center are directed by Howard Lederman, M.D.

It is composed of five faculty members who staff outpatient clinics and are available for inpatient consultations for children with asthma, allergic diseases, primary immunodeficiency, and ataxia telangiectasia. Since the division was founded in 1978, the faculty has been at the forefront of scientific advances in allergy and immunology.

Important scientific contributions by faculty include the identification of the genetic defect responsible for a rare immune condition called X-linked autoimmunity-allergic dysregulation (XLAAD), the identification of cockroach and mouse allergens as major causes of inner-city asthma flare-ups, as well as for the definitive studies on the natural history of milk, egg, peanut, and tree nut allergies and for the development of novel treatments for severe food allergy. These scientific contributions have changed the way allergists and immunologists care for patients.

The division has also trained more than 30 pediatric allergists-immunologists who now represent many of the leaders in allergy and immunology in the United States and abroad.
