Dr. Plotnick grew up in New York and moved to Baltimore to attend college. She received a bachelor’s in chemistry from Goucher College and a medical degree from the University Of Maryland School of Medicine, from which she graduated with honors in 1970.

Dr. Plotnick has been at Hopkins since 1970, where she completed her internship and residency in pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology. Dr. Plotnick became a full professor in 2000.  She has served as clinical director of the division for many years, and as interim division director twice. 

Her major clinical interests are type 1diabetes, growth and puberty disorders and general pediatric endocrinology. She has authored and co-authored many papers on these topics. In addition, Dr. Plotnick has been invited to write many text-book chapters in pediatric endocrinology. She was selected to be among the few pediatric diabetes specialists to codify the standards of care for the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Plotnick has been invited to participate in numerous clinical trials over the last three decades primarily in the areas of growth and growth hormones.

Dr. Plotnick has been instrumental, along with other members of the division, for educating more than one generation of pediatric residents, medical students and fellows in the basics and intricacies of clinical pediatric endocrinology.
