- Pancreatic beta cell regeneration
- Pancreatic insulin secretion models
Dr. Hussein leads the Cell Biology Core of Diabetes Research Center. His research seeks to understand how the Pancreatic Islets of Langerhans respond to different metabolic needs. It is known that when there is not enough insulin and more insulin is needed (as in obesity or in juvenile diabetes mellitus) the insulin-producing beta cells in the islets ramp up their function and also increase in number by cell division. How these two processes are regulated is poorly understood. The laboratory uses genetic mouse models and state-of-the-art molecular biological techniques to understand these two processes and identify potential drug targets for treating humans with either type 1 (juvenile) and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
