Shattuck Family Donates $1 Million for Burn Unit

Mayo and Molly Shattuck have given $1 million through the Shattuck Family Foundation to support construction of a new pediatric burn center at Johns Hopkins. The Shattuck Family Pediatric Burn Unit will be housed in the new 12-story children’s hospital, now under construction and expected to open in 2011.

A member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine board of trustees and CEO of Constellation Energy Group, Mayo A. Shattuck III and his wife, Molly, are members of Hopkins Children’s Development Advisory Council. Their gift will enable the unit to treat more patients, house more equipment and “help us be better prepared in the event of a large-scale emergency,” says George Dover, Given Foundation Professor of Pediatrics and director of Hopkins Children’s.

“This most generous gift is especially important given that the Children’s Center is the designated pediatric burn center for the state of Maryland,” says Mayo Shattuck.

Founded in 1912 as the children's hospital of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the Johns Hopkins Children's Center offers one of the most comprehensive pediatric medical programs in the country, treating more than 90,000 children each year. Hopkins Children’s is consistently ranked among the top children's hospitals in the nation. Hopkins Children’s is Maryland's largest children’s hospital and the only state-designated Trauma Service and Burn Unit for pediatric patients. It has recognized Centers of Excellence in dozens of pediatric subspecialties, including allergy, cardiology, cystic fibrosis, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, pulmonary, and transplant.
