Gastroenterology and Nutrition
The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition is dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care and state-of-the-art techniques in the evaluation and treatment of gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders. We seek to prevent disease and advance medical treatment by following the tripartite mission of Johns Hopkins in providing excellence in patient care, research and education. Our Division includes seven full-time and part-time physician faculty members in addition to nurses and nutritionists high specialized in caring for children with gastrointestinal and liver disorders. We are committed to family-focused care ensuring that the family is involved in all steps of the patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan.
Inpatient services are provided by a highly skilled team that consists of attending physicians, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, social workers, gastroenterology fellows, housestaff and others.

Detecting IBD: Eleanor Lee's Story
Eleanor Lee was just age 2 when she developed a severe bout of diarrhea. Kelly Lee, the child’s mother, said her pediatrician reassured her that everything was fine, but the diarrhea got worse. Another pediatrician recommended lab tests, which showed low levels of albumin in Eleanor’s blood, a potential sign of intestinal inflammation. About that time Eleanor’s breathing became very shallow and she was admitted to a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area.

Tackling Obesity
Eight-year-old Imani just graduated from Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital’s Weigh Smart program. This program tackles America’s fastest growing epidemic – childhood obesity. Ann Scheimann, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Hopkins Children’s, launched Weigh Smart in 2005 as a “no-fault,” family-based group therapy approach to healthy living.
