Welcome from the Chair

We are delighted about your interest in the Harriet Lane Residency Program of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins. We take great pride that we have been able to attract individuals who have pursued careers in virtually all areas of pediatrics: primary care general pediatrics in our community and throughout the country, health policy, global health, subspecialty pediatrics, and general academic pediatrics.
There has never been a more exciting time to be at Johns Hopkins. In April, 2012, we will move into the brand new Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, a 12-story, 560,000 square foot hospital designed to provide the most sophisticated 21st century technology with patient and family comfort at the forefront.
I joined this program over thirty years ago as a resident, and since then I have seen our residents go on to become outstanding scientists, superb subspecialty division directors, serve in important governmental posts such as Director of the Food and Drug Administration, become directors of some of the largest health departments in the country, and equally as important, become fine pediatricians serving the needs of the children and families who are their patients. The products of our program illustrate that the residency curriculum is devoted to training both the academic pediatrician and the pediatrician interested in primary care and general pediatrics. Our program’s curriculum provides the flexibility needed to prepare residents for whatever is the next phase of their careers, while ensuring that they are confident in their skills as general pediatricians.
The key to the success of our residency program is the close interaction of the residents with our faculty and the esprit de corps among the residents who are drawn from all parts of the United States. We look forward to sharing more details of our program with you and welcome any direct contact with me or any of our faculty in pursuing your interest here.
Sincerely,
George J. Dover, M.D.

Welcome from the program directors

We welcome your interest in our pediatric residency program. Whether you plan a career in an academic subspecialty, general community pediatrics, general academic pediatrics, health policy, public health, or global health, our goal is to prepare each resident for the next phase in his or her career. Our program provides a strong foundation in knowledge, clinical skill, decision-making, evidence-based medicine and leadership; while also allowing the flexibility needed for residents to explore various career paths with guidance from experienced and dedicated faculty members. Our residents come from over 40 different medical schools and from every region of the country. Residents from these diverse backgrounds and interests work, with guidance from faculty in all areas of pediatrics. This collaboration between residents, faculty and other disciplines results in the best possible care for patients and the best possible learning environment. Both of us have worked at Hopkins for the past 20 years, and we have found it a privilege to work so closely with our residents. Special pathways that meet the requirements of The American Board of Pediatrics and other relevant Boards accommodate training needs of residents with particular career goals. Please explore this Website, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions about anything you see here.
Sincerely,
Julia McMillan, M.D.andJanet Serwint, M.D.
