Biography:

Dr. Susan Furth completed her undergraduate studies, Summa Cum Laude, at the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree at the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Furth completed her internship and residency in Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.  She also completed her clinical research and fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology from the same hospital.  She then completed her PhD in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Dr. Furth has a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  She is currently an Associate Professor in Pediatrics and a Core Faculty from the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research as well as the Director of the Pediatric Fellowship Program of the Department of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr. Furth is a council member of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the Society of Pediatric Research.  She is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and has served on committees for the National Kidney Foundation. She was also a recipient of the Harriet Lane Home Research Fellowship Award, NIDDK Renal Disease Epidemiology Training Grant Award, Johns Hopkins University Clinician Scientist Award, American Society of Transplantation Young Investigator Award and Pediatric Leaders for the 21st Century – Selected Participant from the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr. Furth’s research focus is in pediatric renal disease particularly chronic kidney disease in children. She is currently involved in a nationwide five-year multi-center clinical cohort trial on chronic kidney disease study in children. She is Principal Investigator of the East Coast Coordinating Center of this largest ever study of kidney disease in children. Dr. Furth has published extensively in topics pertaining to chronic kidney disease in children including pediatric hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and health outcomes in children on dialysis.

Dr. Furth clinical responsibilities include seeing patients at the Pediatric Clinic, Rubenstein Building, Hopkins Children’s, and on the inpatient renal service.
