Resident Life

The Harriet Lane Residency Program Has a Lot to Offer

Residents in our program take advantage of all Baltimore has to offer. We also sponsor our own events for pediatric residents, who make lifelong friends while in Baltimore.

Pediatric residents make lifelong friends during their time at Hopkins Children's. Each year, residents have many opportunities to socialize with their colleagues at events such as a crab feast, a department picnic, a mid-winter formal dinner dance, and a weekend retreat for each residency level (PL-1, PL-2, and PL-3) at a resort chosen by the residents. Many informal social activities also take place.

In addition, numerous films, lectures, plays, and concerts are scheduled at both the Medical Institutions and at Homewood, the University's main campus, 15 minutes away. These events are open to house staff, either free or at nominal cost. Free hourly bus service operates between the Medical Institutions and the Homewood campus.

House staff can use sports facilities, including a year-round swimming pool in the Homewood gym. The Cooley Center, which services the Hospital and School of Medicine community, features a swimming pool; tennis courts; a full-sized gymnasium for basketball and volleyball; an elevated jogging track; six courts for handball, racquetball and squash; and weight, sauna, whirlpool and locker rooms.

About Baltimore

World trade w/ Boat    MD Science Ctr

Baltimore is a diverse city offering many cultural resources locally and in nearby Washington, D.C. Baltimore's Inner Harbor (four minutes from Hopkins by subway) offers the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, the Harborplace markets, and other activities. The University's athletic centers on the East Baltimore and Homewood campuses offer swimming, tennis, basketball, racquetball, squash and weight training. Other recreational activities nearby include hiking, bicycling, canoeing, fishing, Chesapeake Bay sailing, and ocean beaches. Proximity to Washington, D.C., Annapolis, and Philadelphia greatly extends these cultural possibilities. Baltimore is less than 50 miles north of Washington, D.C., and offers easy access to Philadelphia and New York. In fact, there is hardly a pastime—boating, skiing, hiking, bicycling, antiquing, historic sightseeing, swimming and camping—that can't be found within an hour or two of the city.

Baltimore offers a unique blend of historic charm, ethnic heritage and urban vitality, serving a community of people of all backgrounds and interests. Historic and cultural attractions, specialty shopping and a wide variety of restaurants make for pleasant and affordable pastimes.

Often called a "renaissance city" because of its successful urban revitalization, Baltimore offers all the opportunities of a big city, yet provides the warmth, friendliness, and easy commuting of a smaller community. The city has a long, rich heritage, and boasts many diverse neighborhoods with affordable housing. For more information about the Baltimore area, please visit http://www.ci.baltimore.md.us/visitor/.
