    Summa Cum NICU

    NICU photoHundreds of adults and children returned to Johns Hopkins last week for Hopkins Children's annual neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) reunion.     Small Named Pediatric Oncology Director

    Donald Small, M.D. imageDonald Small, a nationally recognized leader in the research and treatment of childhood blood cancers, has been selected to head the Pediatric Oncology Division of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Acting director since September 2006, Small intends to focus on expanding the childhood cancer program, both its clinical trials and research efforts. Read more.

    Very Young Most at Risk For Cardiac Med Errors 

    Infants and young children treated with heart medications are more likely than their older peers to get the wrong dose or end up on the wrong end of medication errors, according to research led by Hopkins Children's. Computerizing drug orders with built-in checking mechanisms - pioneered at Hopkins Children's - can reduce or prevent such errors, investigators report. Read more. 

    Exploring the Concept of Hope
    In a series of focus groups at Hopkins Children's, parents identified themselves as the bearers of hope. When a child is seriously ill, supporting families around the changing nature of hope may help health-care professionals partner with parents while maintaining honest communications, investigators report  in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine Read more.
